4 Apr 2006 - RELEGATION SPOT PLAY OFF
A thrilling climax to the Winter 2005-06 season for the Mixed First Division. Wickford L.T.C. and Southend L.T.C. both finished with 19 points and exactly the same set difference. This lead to a play off match between the two clubs. A toss of the coin gave Southend Lawn the home advantage over Wickford TC, and the play off match took place at the Broadclyst Gardens club on Monday 3rd April.
Graham Wells & Sandy Bysouth took the first pairs stage for the Lawn and won 6-2 6-4 over Cliff Warrick and Sandy Ellis. The Wickford second pairing of Neil George and Claire Bullman came back even stronger to win 6-1 6-2 over Graham Evans and Jo Day. As per the rules, a single set decider has then to be played. One person from each pair changes partners and plays a single tie break set.
Dingdonging backwards and forwards the four eventually reached a tie break situation. Southend Lawn gave up two match points at 6-4 in this exciting tiebreaker. Wickford then took the initiative to win their stay in Division One by virtue of an 8-6 tie break victory.
