3 Apr 2006 - ECHO PRESS RELEASE

LEIGH AND WESTCLIFF LAWN TENNIS ASSOCIATION

PRESS RELEASE BY DAVE LINCOLN TO THE EVENING ECHO
FINAL 2005/2006 WINTER LEAGUE POSITIONS

MENS LEAGUES...

Mens Div. One .. Westcliff Hard take the Mens Division One title for the fifth time. Eight points separate then from runners up Wickford. A complete turn round for last years winners Rayleigh as they suffer the drop into Division two

Mens Div. Two .. As expected the young men of Leigh took this division by storm winning with a massive winning margin of 23 points. I know the first division wait for them with eager anticipation of great matches. Westcliff Hard seconds slip out of the division ready to take on the division three challengers.

Mens Div. Three ... Hockley are on their way back with a very good eight point winning lead and leaving Westcliff Lawn 2 stranded at the foot of the league. The unfortunate consequence of this is that the Lawn will push their third team down as well.

Mens Div. Four .. Rayleigh?s second squad came up trumps and march closer to their first team winning the division by five clear points. Hadleigh's seconds not so happy, falling out of division four by virtue of a four point losing gap.

Mens Div. Five .. The second team from Rochford earned themselves promotion with a seven point buffer and head for Division four next season. Wickford 2 suffered a drop in membership resulting in them struggling this year and a drop in division followed. All is being addressed and membership is expected to be healthier in the future.

Mens Div. Six .. Southend Lawn 3 needed to take a maximum six points from their final match to win the division, this they achieved and climbed up a division for the second year running. Hadleigh Park 3 drop down and lost out by only two points.

Mens Div. Seven .. The determination from Rayleigh 3 to win this division was clear to see
by the weekly results. They set their store at week one and finished up the leaders by13 points.
With two teams in Seven Rochford had a hard job to feed both; their fourth squad finished with the wooden spoon but still enjoyed the flavour of competitive tennis.

LADIES LEAGUES

Ladies Div. One .. The Kent Elms ladies seem to be unstoppable and take the first division title for the sixth time on the trot and nine times in all. Wickford had a very difficult season and drop down ready to regroup for next year.

Ladies Div. Two .. Anything our men can do we can do as well. The ladies of Leigh earn promotion with 53 points, the exact number of points their mens first team took their league with.
Hadleigh Park are having a recruitment drive and pop out of the division to regroup.

Ladies Div. Three .. Westcliff Hard 2 just made it by the skin of their teeth, one point gave them the division three title over Rayleigh's seconds. Hockley 2 suffered the drop by a similar one point margin and drop into four.

Ladies Div. Four .. The third squad from Leigh built up a seven point lead and take the title. Alas that can't climb out of the division with their second team nestled in the centre of Division three.
Ladies Div. Five .. With two teams in Division five Thorpe Bay 5 outshone T.B. 4 and took the league in style by winning with an eight point gap. Crowstone 2 off the pace in their first year, but gaining confidence all the time.

THE MIXED

Mixed Div. One .. Ten points sealed this league and Thorpe Bay earned their trophy by winning the mixed league for the second year running with an excellent 10 point buffer. Wickford & Southend Lawn take the courts on Monday next for a play off to decide who will be relegated. Both with the same points and set difference the Lawn took home advantage with a coin toss at the AGM.

Mixed Div. Two .. Leigh again move into a top division but this time by the narrowest margin of one point, another in form team moves into our top mixed division. Hadleigh Park just miss out and slip into the third for next season. That of course depends on the play off in division one as to if Southend Lawn can come up or not.

Mixed Div. Three .. Southend Lawn 2 earn the top spot by nine points but they have to wait with fingers crossed to see if their first team can save the relegation in the play off match. Westcliff Lawn 2 take the tumble into the lower division for 2006/2007.

Mixed Div. Four .. Thorpe Bay 4 gave themselves this title with a massive 15 point winning margin, but being league locked the promotion honour goes to second place Leigh 2.
Wickford 2 slip into five for next season.

Mixed Div. Five .. Leigh 3 take the clubs fifth title for this winters campaign by another big margin, this time sixteen points separate them from the second place club. Rochford 2 will be playing in Division six for the next winter campaign.

Mixed Div. Six .. Rayleigh 3 earned their club a third cup for this winter. Six points separate them from Leigh Road Baptist and they change placed with Rochford 2. This years mixed wooden spoon goes to the new team from Crowstone. It is nice to see clubs giving space to their new members for competitive tennis.

Enjoy your break ladies and gentlemen, the 1st of May we will be off again for the Summer.

League Secretary.
