Sadly John Matthews the real tennis playing gent from Invicta passed away early in the month of August 2006. John will always be remembered by his white cap and his love of playing tennis matches in his track suit bottoms. John can be seen pictured on one of the rare occasions in his shorts, this being the 1982 mens doubles finals at Wickford. John won this event and a winter mens doubles in 1987. His commitment to the Leigh and Westcliff was outstanding and his Veteran results amazing. Our champion of the spin took the Veterans mixed title in 1984 and 85 and the mens Vets no less than ten times between the years of 1981 to 1993.
